Fried Green Tomatoes, Purple Striped Beans and Blueberries

We sure have a Bumper crop of GREEN tomatoes. The weather this year in the PNW has not been kind to our garden. Tomorrow marks the first day of September and the weather doesn't look to promising. If they make it all the way to red we will have literally hundreds of glorious Tommy-toes. We (mainly my husband) will try our hand at canning them - along with his to-die-for spaghetti sauce. Now that's sumptin' to talk about. It's so good I swear I could drink it!

All this leads me to wondering: Are fried green tomatoes made with unripe fruit or is there a green tomato variety I don't know about? Does anyone have a good recipe they want to share? Speaking of unknown varieties...I had no idea there was such thing as Green Beans with such a lovely purple design. But here they are- freshly picked from our garden! I was a little Leary to try them. It's like convincing yourself a red banana is normal. It just didn't make sense to me. But let me tell you they are divine!

My lovely Aunt and Uncle stopped by today and brought us some fabulous local blueberries. Aren't they pretty? They taste even better then they look!

What inspires your designs?
Current wedding trends, colours and browsing for supplies on Etsy. I will find something and base a new design on that. I have some gorgeous reproduction lock and keys I am very keen to use.

The diamonds and pearls bouquet is by far the most popular with brides from all around the world.

Well that's her name but her official title is The Duchess of Alba.

A distant relative (who knew?) of Queen Elizabeth, wants to give up her title to marry a civil servant (gasp!) young enough to be her son. Sounds kind of Crazy but consider this. The gentleman IS 60 years old.

What do her Children think about it? "He's not a gold digger" the Duchess claims. Never the less she hands over much of her vast fortune to her kids.

Me. A few years ago we sold our house and moved to Idaho. (not a fan) We stayed less then a year and I was ecstatic to see the lovely green of the PNW come into view on our drive home. But that's not where I am going with this. We lived in Orchards until we were tired of taxiing our kids back and forth daily to Battle Ground, our home town. So I began the dreadful task of finding a house to rent. I scoured the local property management websites. Finding a home in the right location, price range, size...was proving daunting. I would call to check on a place and it would be gone. Finally I came across a town house that was very familiar. And it was just one street away from our old house! I called and told them we would take it!! The woman on the other end paused and asked in a surprised voice "Don't you want to see it first?" I didn't need to, I explained. My husband had done some work on it when it was built! I called Mr. Wonderful and gave the good news- we went right in and signed the lease papers.

The next day as our moving truck was being loaded, I went ahead to open the place up.

Much to my surprise someone was living in it! I pulled up by the curb and sat there baffled. Before calling the agency I pulled out our lease papers. I contemplated out loud that maybe I should knock on the door. My daughter Alexa looked at me like I was crazy. I gave the papers another glance. Panic set in. The address wasn't even close to where I sat. I was so convinced I knew where it was, I never checked the address on the lease papers. This was S.E. and we needed to be at the same street only N.W. What and where did we rent??

I couldn't, just couldn't call my husband. He is used to me after 18 years- but this? I pulled away from the curb trying to figure out where the place was. I drove around town for twenty minutes trying to find the proper address. What if it was a dump? What if, what if..? I finally pulled into the right driveway and decided I better call Mr. Wonderful and let him in on ~~our~~ my mistake. I won't tell you what he said. I rushed to tell him the outside looked OK as I fumbled with the lock. I slowly pushed the door open. Whew! It was a respectable place. Clean and nice. It would work. It would have to work! The papers were signed. Yes, this is a long story and to make it a bit shorter...I had to let our family and friends know where they could REALLY find us. Did I ever tell you about the Pepper and Salt Shakers?

Have you ever tried to buy someone perfume for a gift? It's nearly impossible. I have a hard enough time buying

myself a new fragrance so I wouldn't presume to buy for someone else. I tend to get stuck wearing the same scent for a few years... or more. For a long time I have been wearing CoCo Mademoiselle. The other day I was mindlessly browsing Sephora and

there it was. Dolce and Gabbana 18 La Lune. I fell in love again. It is slightly reminiscent of a a long ago favorite- Paris by Yves St. Laurent. Soft but not weak Not to floral, or to musky. I am not good at identifying the notes but I know what I like. And I really, really ~~like~~ love 18 La Lune!

How long can one carry on about perfume? In my case...a long time. At the risk of sounding snobbish, I can almost always tell cheap perfume. It can be costly buying from a department store over a drug store- but it is well worth the indulgence! Several bottles look nice arranged on a dresser but to many perfume choices leave me confused. Which one should I wear today? What is my mood? Perhaps my perfume habits say something about me... am I not big on change? Am I single minded? Or Do I simply know exactly what I want and won't settle for less?

I would like you to meet a very special friend who is also a dear cousin-o-mine! We grew up together here in the Pacific Northwest (Oh the stories we could tell!) but alas, She married and moved to New Hampshire. Connie has now lived in N.H. longer then she lived here! How can that be?

We get to see each other once a year if we are lucky. Last year we met in Florida 3 times to be with her sweet Mama who passed on to glory in July. Auntie Carole is dearly missed, especially by her daughters who went through their first holiday season with out her.

This could turn into a book- but I wanted to share her blog with you all!

Artisan fair fun...

Here are a few pictures of my table/little booth at the fair. I didn't have my camera so took a few pictures with a cell phone. I had the best time visiting with friends and fellow vendors! I finally had a chance to decorate our tree tonight but realized the lights I bought are on white cord- all you see is tangled white cord against the green tree. Sigh. Guess I will try again tommorow.

Ok, don't laugh...

Welcome to my little corner of...the garage. After the book-and now magazine "Where Woman Create" was published, I said I would show you my "studio." Go ahead and laugh-or gasp if your inclined.

I cannot even claim that it is organized chaos. Nope. It is just plain 'ol chaos.

What begins in it's proper place...

Usually ends up like this.

I wonder if I had all the perfect furniture and containers...would it stay in place? Somehow, I doubt it.

Do you ever judge a book by it's cover? I do.

I am getting ready to be a vendor in a Artisan faire- taking place Dec. 4th. More on that later...

I love costume jewelry - it is hard to part with my vintage brooches...

The bright spot in my room -A tangle of romantic roses, but peonies are my true love.

Projects needing attention...Will they turn into something beautiful?

I was inspired to make a top hat. Mr. Wonderful (a.ka. my sweet husband) helped me make a pattern. I am excited to make another!

Yep. Another table of stuff. Can you have to much stuff?

I should be embarrassed shouldn't I? Acceptance is a better policy:)

And in other news, Mr. Wonderful kept me company yesterday. He kindly entered addresses in my handy dandy GPS. We skipped around Portland with ease, from one estate sale to the next. As you know, there is no time to waste when you're on a treasure hunt!

I found a few exquisite things- and then the big one. You know, the thing you just HAVE to buy.The one that makes your heart beat a little faster...Well it happened. There it was in all it's rusty glory. The tallest, most unusual, to die for plant stand. ( That will likely never hold a plant. You understand don't you?) It twisted and turned in glorious splendor. Or a hunk of junk according to Mr. Wonderful. I had a decision to make. Buy it and call it quits for the day? Ooooh. torture! I decided to place a bid and try not think about it going to someone else. The very perky lady at the register rung up my "smalls" and offered a tip...

"Put odd numbers and uneven cents". I paused for a second and thought brilliant! Why had I never thought of that? I furiously scribbled out my first number out and took her advice. I jotted down a uneven dollar amount and 51cents. If someone was just a dollar or a penny off...I could reign triumphant!

To my utter delight it worked! Tomorrow I get to pick up my hunk of junk for half the listed price. plus or minus a few cents. All in all I had a great weekend with a great guy- and tomorrow he gets to take me to pick it up. (needless to say, it won't fit in my trunk!) Guess he didn't think of that as he watched my anguish over how much to bid!

I found the book "City Dogs" by Collins Publishers (didn't see a author...) at a garage sale. I fell in love with the pampered pooches. It seems like most people are either dog or cat lovers- rarely both. I adore little dogs and hope to get a tea cup pup soon. Do you lean one way or the other?

I hate, did I say HATE dirty carpet? Kids, grand babies, me...all culprits. I have a carpet shampooer that I have to haul out far to often- convenient, but awkwardly impossible to do the stairs.

So there I was standing in line at JoAnn Fabrics, glanced down and saw the red bottle staring up at me. I figured worth a shot, and it was the best $7.99 I ever spent! My stairs came out beautifully in minutes. (I also use it for spot cleaning other areas in between shampooing).

My husband can't believe I am this thrilled about a cleaning product, but then he hasn't had the good fortune of wrestling with my monster machine.

Ghosts of houses past...

I was obsessed with cottage style as you can see. My tastes have changed a bit but that doesn't stop me from getting nostalgic looking back. I prefer a bit more simple look now, a little less stuff. However, there are some things I wonder why I got rid of! I want some of it back! Call it sellers remorse!

That led into my kitchen...( I see I left the dishes in the sink, must have had better things to do!)

The little breakfast nook...

Not sure why the garbage can is randomly out of place...The double oven was nice. Not so much the pot rack, I dropped a heavy pan I was hanging up and shattered the stove top.

The built in was fun, especially at Christmas with splashes of red. Now I would pare it down a bit and remove some of the "stuff."

Come upstairs with me...It was cool to find the wood floor under the indoor/outdoor carpet the previous owners had down- but a bear to refinish!

The landing at the top never felt finished or quite right so lets turn around...

and go back down...

I never felt right about the living room either, needed color on the walls. I wish I still had the lamp in the left corner!

And finally, the main bathroom!

Things weren't "styled" and put into place, these are pictures we took as we got close to being done remodeling. Thanks for coming down memory lane with me!

I love history. Wars and Generals are interesting- but I am fascinated by the daily life of years gone by. Especially when it concerns fashion. My favorite era is the 20's and 30's. I would love to spend a ~~day~~ no a ~~week~~...better yet a month in each decade! We can get a peek of it in old magazines but to really get a sense of history...watch old video's!

I know that times were much more difficult then- imagine life without modern conveniences? Somehow it manages to look like a happy, care free time!

Forgive me Karen, I am way late and mixed up on the color challenge. I am going to throw this in here even though it doesn't really fit the category! Kind of cheating, I know but I adore these hair products. The first time I tried them I was hooked. My hair was rebelling against all the drying and flat irons and after one use it was tame and soft, none of that frizziness!! I have seen several imposter's on the market, don't bother...they are not the same! Look for the brown bottle with blue label. You can check out their website here.

Maybe not entirely but I am finding many of my favorite blogger's have FB pages as well. It seems to be a faster, easier way to get noticed...to announce special events and gather followers. I love discovering and reading new blogs, keeping up on old favorites-the trouble is I get so engrossed, hours can pass in a flash. Literally. One link, one click and I am on to a whole new list of blogs. Sigh. Now I have to get to the laundry.

This oh- so- romantic southern town

Boerne, TX. (pronounced Bernie- population 9,000) - sits just outside of San Antonio.

The quaint Main St. is lined with to- die- for shops... Texas Style.... Love the iron balcony at this upstairs boutique... That sits next to this restaurant-which was beautifully lit up at night and bustling with people sitting OUTDOORS- (temp. a spring like 65 degrees...)

Room Re-Do...A long time coming

Vintage style decor cannot be hurried. You cannot run out and "buy" in a day, a look that has to be "found." These are my excuses-I started taking my decor back to my original love: Shades of creamy white, many months ago. Here are some photos of my progress...

Still looking for the perfect coffee and end tables. Oh, and a "vintage" roses area rug. Very faded looking. The lamp shade on the left? Gotta go. Hmmm. Haven't found the right chairs for the kitchen table.

Lamp shade....Don't know how to turn the flash off my camera. Can't find the instruction book. No surprise considering my "studio." One day I will give you a good laugh and show you my garage. I envy all the beautiful, organized spaces I see out here in blog land...

P.S. I stopped at the ultimate estate sale last weekend. I got a TRUCKLOAD of stuff for the most incredible price. Sue, if you are reading this....You know the blue cabinet you saw last Saturday? I scored one like it- tell you how much later. And my husband thought I was going grocery shopping. That was my intention-you should have heard him when I called a hour and a half later and asked him to bring his truck. Sometime the best sales are the ones you didn't plan on going to. Today I was going to be productive and get a bunch of projects done for the upcoming flea market at Uncovered Ruby. I pulled out my stuff and got lost in boxes of vintage empherma. I have a obsession for old papers, advertisements and such. (What am ever going to do with so much stuff? I decided to make little packets from my collection- all originals... to sell at the flea)

Anyhoooo, I want to share this forlorn love story with you. I doubt "Leo" ever dreamt his little 'ol letter would be fascinating (at least to me) nearly a hundred years later. Is it wrong to publish someones private thoughts? A hundred years from now, where will our Internet follies end up?

The envelope was torn but I know from other letters I have collected that all they did was put a name and the city and it was delivered!

My Dear Girl, Blackfoot Idaho, June -26-1912

I received your letter the other day and have neglected to answer it, but hope you will forgive me. I have been looking for you every day and every evening and have made up my mind that you have quit coming to town at all. I also noticed you was not at the dance Sat. night. So I guess all that is left for me to do is write and tell you all about it.

I am strictly up against it in several ways and find that I have to give up all foolishness such as buggie rides and other pleasures. All of which I regret very much. That is until I get fixed up. Now perhaps you don't know the meaning of fixed up, but I will explain further.

You know that I am slightly hard of hearing which caused me much annoyance and I am getting much worse. Also that my eyes are bother me half the time- which makes me sit up and take notice. For the first thing I know, I won't know anything.

I am thinking about going to the lake. Now my dear little girl, I don't want you to pass up anything for me. I know it must be awe fully hard to stick out on the ranch, so go ahead and have all the fun you can.I have got to stick it out some way.

It seems a century since I saw you last. I wish you were near me tonight. That you might cheer me up. Well I must close for this time, it is way past my usual bedtime. Nearly 12 o'clock.

I hope I have cast a little light on the mystery. Now take my advice. Don't miss out on any chance to have a good time but be a good little girl all the time.

Yesterday after a great day of junking, my mind whirling with fresh ideas, I realized my gas tank was below E. I pulled in to the gas station and started pumping my gas. As I waited I decided I was awfully thirsty. What luck! I spied a soda machine just a few steps away so I grabbed some change....I had to step over the hose now attached to my gas tank, a easy task for most. With my eyes on the soda machine I stepped low and tripped. I fell forward,change flying and landed in a heap on the ground. I looked up to see if anyone had seen my mishap. Yep. I stared into the eyes of a guy in the car next to me. He didn't flinch. But I did. Somehow I twisted my ankle, and it HURT. I hobbled over and bought that darn water. (it's the water's fault, right?) I woke up a couple of times last night aware of achy, throbbing in my ankle. I limped out of bed this morning and sit enjoying my second cup off coffee-swollen ankle propped up. None the worse for the wear I guess. Except maybe my pride.

Is it area rug or a wall hanging? I was shopping at Monticello (my favorite antique haunt) When I spied a curious looking rolled up bundle. It appeared to be made out of thin wood slats...I could see it had a image on it. I unrolled it with a little flip and my heart skipped a beat. The moment I saw the precocious women posing in shades of cream and browns....with just a hint of color, I knew it was mine. It was a rug! I have never really seen anything like it. Could I really walk on it?

Freedom is Not Free...

The day that changed how we live forever. We lost thousands of lives and our sense of security was shaken. We began to do things once unheard of in the land of the free. Taking our shoes off before boarding a plane and having our purses checked before events. Our values were questioned with racial profiling and war took on a whole new meaning. We must never forget the lost lives and always remember our soldiers serving- so that we may sleep in peace at night. Thank you to their families who sacrifice so much and To our son Ivan serving in the U.S. Air Force, we love you and are so proud of you! God Bless America!

When did you start blogging and what inspired you to do so?

Corey:

A friend of mine started a blog before blogging was a word. One day over lunch she encouraged me to do the same she said, "Now that you have free time you should put your brocante stories down, you won't regret it, do it for your children. Go to TYPEPAD and start a blog." I had not a clue as to what she was talking about. My friend dared me and well I am a sucker for dares.The day I started I was hooked.

JCH:

"Tongue in Cheek...." What is the back story behind your blog name?

Corey:

The same friend who told me about Blogging, said I needed a name for my blog. I was clueless as to what she meant. Since she called my type of antiques, "Tongue in Cheek" because most of my home is full of broken bits and charming yesterday, but peeling today sort of things, I thought I would go with that.Though in retrospect, Tongue in Cheek doesn't say much about France, or French or Antiques. I am amazed that anyone finds my blog online. Tongue in Cheek sounds more like comedy than antiquing and living in France.

JCH:

I dearly love my husband, but American Husband doesn't have the same romantic appeal as French Husband! (FH) Is it a loving moniker or is there something more behind it?

Corey:

JCH:

I have often wondered why so many people in France have the same name. Tell us about getting permission to name your son....

Corey:

Up until 15 years ago, if you had a baby in France you had to pick a name, that was on a list at the city hall. Each region had "its" names. A child named Yann for example meant that the child was born in Brittiany. Because Yann is a name from Brittany. If you had a child and lived in Provence, the name Yann wasn't going to be on the list. Sacha is a name from Russia, it also has been on the list of approved names in France for over a hundred years.Times have changed and now you can name your baby any name you like.

JCH: As we speak you are on holiday, Traveling by motorcycle on a amazing journey- traveling along the French Riviera, Genova, Milan- Lake Como....Did you see George Clooney? (I had to ask)

Corey: No, we did not cross paths. Though recently I saw Brad and Angie at the brocante in France. We rode 4600km in three weeks, we rode onward to Austria, Prague, Budapest, through Hungray to Croatia. I am hooked and can hardly wait to get back on the bike again.

JCH:

Reading your blog is like a good book you can't put down. On a recent post you said if " I were to write a book I would call it Park Bagatelle." would "Forever in France" be suitable?( Do you see moving back to the states at some point?)

Corey:

First, if I were to write a book I would want to write about the lives of four women I know and what happened to them in the course of 20 years. The four women are women I met when Chelsea was three months old at a park in France. It is about our lives, and the amazing, strange, fearsome turns that have happened... I would want to write the story in honor of my friends who has suffered bravely at the hand of injustice.Regarding whether I foresee myself moving back to the USA. I highly doubt it, but then I never believed or thought I would live in Europe... Nevertheless I seriously doubt we would move back to live full time.

JCH:

You work has been featured in several magazines. A honor I am sure, which is your favorite piece?

Corey: The story in Romantic Homes about my Godmother's home.

JCH:

Photography or writing?

Corey:

Oh! That is a toss up. I can say I would rather go antiquing than dancing and I love to dance. That is like saying who do I like better my daughter or my son. I cannot decide.I wish I had a teacher, who could teach me more about writing and photography. JCH: When I finally make it France, will you show me the ropes? (as I write that, I think how American phrases could be taken literally..)

If you mean a few good brocantes, the best bakery, a favorite place to soak it all in, how to say Oh la la both as a positive and as a negative...yes no problem!

The other day I took advantage of something that rarely happens in my life. I had five whole hours to myself. It felt like I won lottery! I had a long "to do" list but selfishly decided to do something for myself. The laundry could wait, the post office would open again the next day-My husband, kids and grand baby were otherwise occupied...

I woke up and hit the floor running, made a double coffee and headed out. I knew right where I was going. It was a forty minute drive- but I didn't care. There was a little shop I was dying to visit. I had tried before but showed up on a day they were closed. I had peeked in the window and couldn't wait to take pictures to share with you. I took the right exit off the highway and then turned on the wrong road. A hour and a half later I walked through the doors. It was everything I thought it would be. But better! The shop was very small but arranged so perfectly, you could stand in one place for a half hour-gazing. As I reached for my camera It occurred to me - the polite thing to do to would to be ask if I could take some pictures so I could rant and rave on my blog about them. Before the friendly girl behind the counter could utter a word, I heard a emphatic "NO!" from around the corner. There was a awkward pause and she said "I guess not." The owner (I assume) poke her head in the room for a second and then disappeared again. No pleasant Hello, No friendly welcome, No apologetic "I am paranoid people will copy my ideas, but thank you anyway."

I took a moment to recover. Doesn't the old saying go "even bad publicity is good publicity?" Mine would have been reeeealy good! I purchased a few items and left the store. I will not mention the name of the store, but if you are ever in the Milwaukee OR. area...enter at your own risk!

Thankfully that wasn't the end of my day. I had passed another store I had wanted to visit for almost as long! As you know, my husband is a world class bread baker. So Bob's Red Mill held more the a little interest for me. (specialty flour and foods) Besides, by now I was hungry. I pulled into a overflowing parking lot, drove around...and then again... and finally parked on the street.

As I entered my senses were overwhelmed. Should I shop first- or eat at the delightful cafe? Since I had only coffee, I opted for breakfast. (served all day) My guy can wake up and eat spaghetti or a corn dog, but there is a certain order to life. Breakfast, Lunch then dinner. I was still on breakfast. I placed my order then wandered down the aisles. Everywhere I looked there were specialty flours and mixes- I was sure even the most elementary cook could conquer. Hot cereal, gluten free, a bit of this and a bit of that. A cookbook section, pre-made bread and cookies, specialty cookware...I could go on and on. And it all felt so....healthy. So special(ty)

I sat down to eat my perfectly cooked eggs with "home made bread." This is the part where the contrast between stores was glaring. I heard my server say to someone at the table next to me- "Bob, these guests would like to speak to you." True story! He may not be in the pages of US Weekly, but here, Bob was just as much a celebrity as...Leo DiCaprio! He stood from his meal, walked around the table and shook hands with his customers. They shared a laugh or two and when they were done- he cleared his table. If you're not from our parts, Bob's Red Mill products are usually found in the health food or natural isles of your grocery store.

As I shoveled the last few bites of food into my mouth, I decided I WOULD take a picture with this friendly Atelier Bob. I stood up, reached for my bag- and turned as he walked away. I didn't want to chase him down but I definitely knew I would not only mention him, I would bring my family and friends back. Besides, you can tour the flour mill/factory and that is something I would love to do! Here's to Bob! He doesn't know it but he restored my faith in the kindness of man! AND that is why I was the only customer in the other shop, and had to park in the street at Bob's!

Now you have the perfect excuse (in case you need one) to donate your unwanted items. And another excuse (in case you need one) to go treasure hunting. The Re-Gifting Store opened this week in Vancouver. Instead of giving to other over priced thrift stores (Goodwill, anyone?) Consider giving to this shop where ALL of the proceeds are given to local charities. The pictures are of some of the items in the store. Right now they are having a clothing drive to benefit Open House Ministries and underprivileged children in our community. The kids will be able to come in and shop for school clothes at no charge. This can make a tremendous difference in their lives. Giving your time is a great gift as well, volunteers are needed for pricing and display- and you get first Dibs! Please help a great cause and mention the store on your blogs!

My Guilty Pleasure...

Tonight at 7pm is the season opener of Bravo's Flipping out. I discovered it a couple of years ago and was instantly hooked. As far as reality shows go, this one is on the top of my list! It centers around Jeff- who buys run down houses in California and remakes them into stunning homes. But that's not what gets me. I watch in awe and disbelief (and many laughs) because he is the MOST particular, perfectionists EVER to walk the planet. Heaven forbid one of his staff screws something up. Water bottles turned exactly in one direction, his pets get massages and NOTHING is out of place ever, not in his home, not in his life. That's an impossible standard, right? Thus the double meaning behind "Flipping Out." Jeff''s episodes of outrage are usually controlled but...shall we say very direct? Seeing is believing. Watch it and let me know what you think. You can catch back episodes on bravotv.com. By the way, did I mention he is gorgeous? P.S. I also Tivo The Real Housewives of Orange County and TRH of New York. There. I admitted it. I am a reality show junkie.

What NOT to say at a garage sale

I have purchased several vintage bikes over the years. The one in the photo was the last one I bought. I have never paid over $25.00. (all from my secret garage sale route) Last weekend My husband and I stopped at a sale. I spied the old white bike before we got out of the car and I announced to him "It's mine!" I checked out the price tag then did a once over on their goods. It really was the only thing worth buying. Since I always figure it doesn't hurt to try, I asked the guy if he wood take less for it. He hemmed and hawed and finally said "I might if you're a serious buyer." I wondered why I had to be serious, couldn't it just be good fun? "Would you take $20.00?" I asked? (down from $25.00) At first he looked stupefied then he looked a bit angry. Then came a long rant about it being 4o years old, he rode it on a paper route-it held a lot of meaning for him...As I listened to him I thought ""Wow, he does take it serious, but seriously-if he was so attached, why is he selling it?

When he took a breath, I said "OK, I will pay $25.00." By now he was outraged. "It's worth $2,500" he said loudly enough for the other shoppers to get interested in our discussion. " I should have it priced way higher then $250.00 but it needs a little work." I looked at my embarrassed husband who gave me the eye that said "let's get out of here." Somehow I had missed the extra little $0 on the tag -but I was starting to feel offended, why couldn't he just have said from the get go that I had read it wrong? My husband could see I was working up a return lecture for the guy (Norah, if you are reading this-are you surprised?) and guided me to the car mid sentence. I was a little embarrassed and I wouldn't normally argue over someones treasure...But did he have to make it look like I was trying to rip him off? Note to self: never make a offer without first asking the price. Note to self: next time don't be so cheap, I would have paid $25.00 for it no problem.

I think so. Just ask my husband! In the short time I have been blogging, I have seen a a few bloggers I love decide to take a break. They will be missed and I hope they come back soon! It sends a great message to me: Love it but be able to leave it for a moment! I haven't begun to touch on all the blogs I want to visit. AND keep up with. I even get up early to check things out in blog land! Here's to finding balance! Having said that, I am going to take advantage of Grandma's bragging rights. Meet Mr. Emori, the light of our lives. At 2, This handsome guy keeps us all on our toes! Watch out world! He is standing next to a cherubic (just like him...) column that I found last weekend-while feeding my other addiction...junking. And warriors would do battle. O.K., perhaps that is a slight exaggeration. A few years back- one long winter day, my husband decided to make bread. He produced 2 perfect loaves of piping hot goodness that disappeared in minutes. This was the start of a mission to become a artisan bread maker. For months hardly a day went by without the delectable aroma of fresh bread-taunting me to resist it's magic pull. Sourdough, French, Pugaliese...you name it, I have been the willing guinea pig. Operative word here, pig. I had to admit despite the wonder of it all, it didn't look good on my hips. I begged him to stop-which he eventually did. There is one little number that has kept me battling good versus evil. What you don't know from the photo is this foccacia bread is filled with sweet basil, Gorgonzola and mozzarella cheese. It's chewy and smooth all at the same time. Is it wrong to be in love with foccacia bread? The jewel in the crown is the rosemary poked and baked into the top of the bread. Sprinkled with sea salt and olive oil, it is a meal in itself. I have been known to devour (almost) a whole loaf. Did I just admit that? My congenial guy has been asked and delivered enough for an entire wedding reception. Now if I can just get him to create a zero fat, zero calorie version.

I admit, I am not always first to get the joke, and I didn't think after so many years of marriage, I could still get embarrassed in front of my husband. But then it happened. I was running late one afternoon and as I was passing this little shop by the side of the road- I noticed a antiques sign in the window. I quickly decided that I was already 15 minutes late, would five more make that big of a difference? Not wanting to admit I was shopping, I ignored my cell phone ringing in my purse and dashed inside. I raced down the aisles separated by raw shelving hoping to find something to make being late worth it. And then, there they were. Right at eye level. Chippy little pepper and salt shakers monogrammed with my initials. I stood in disbelief wondering about the person, who had my exact initials, monogrammed on these little wonders. Was it a wedding gift? Did it match their set of China? I carefully reached up to check the price. $18.00. OK, they had my initials- but were they $18.00 cute? All at once I decided no, but they were personalized for me. I made my purchased and hurried home, all the while picturing my husbands amazement as I showed him my find. I rushed into the house and ceremoniously unwrapped my treasure.I told him my story before slowly revealing the pepper and salt shakers. As I carefully set them on the microwave- He paused, looked at me and said......"You're serious?" In that moment I realized I there was no way to play it off. This story would go down in family history. Told over and over again at each reunion, birthday and shower. I am Legend.

Which by the way, the grey now out numbers the brown, or was it blond? Maybe red. Thank goodness for hair color! I am however, going back to my what fits me best in home decor. I think it was the amazing Barn House flea market that made me face a few facts. I may like a certain style in someone ELSE'S home, but I can't live with what I don't love. I went home and talked my ever patient husband into a new couch. (poor guy, that is just a start..) I am now sitting on my deliciously creamy couch, dreaming about adding some of those great burlap pillows I saw at BH. Note to self: Lot's of color is fine for fresh fruit or a box of crayons-just not in my living room.

I came across this large envelope the other day, tucked among some other "childhood treasures." It brought me rushing back to my days in college. I was taking merchandising as my minor and my term paper was on Coco Chanel. I had written to Chanel in Paris (I don't remember what my request was) long after the course had ended, I received a package from Chanel. It would have been useless in a sense, I don't understand a word of French! Inside were pictures of their current (circa 1992) "Collection Haute Couture." On the back of each picture were the design details. (I assume) Someday I may have the letter translated- though I am sure it is a generic response! awww...the dreams of the young and fearless...

Vintage Bathing Suits...Sweet Summer Time!

I found this framed vintage bathing suit at a sweet little shop in Sun River Idaho. There started my love affair with vintage beach decor..I have filled my bathroom with pictures of bathing beauties- I threw in a brown zebra rug for a bit of glam. My 14 year old daughter has begged me to take the display apart so she can wear the swim suit. I have so far refused, but given the scrappy little pieces offered in the stores today-I am tempted to oblige!

Admittedly, there are some things I should let go of. This is not one of them! Back in the day when my husband was eagerly pursuing me (he had me at hello!) I told him I wouldn't marry him unless he took me to Paris on our honeymoon. When he proposed , a whole 'nother story, I blushed and said yes!! O.K., maybe I didn't blush but it sounds sweet. Since then I have lived as a Francophile vicariously through others. A wanna be of sorts. 16 years later, (whew!) I haven't let him forget my condition to marriage. I know that one day we will celebrate one anniversary or another along the banks of the Seine!

each new home is a fresh palette. I never know which direction my decorating will go until we move in. The only consist thing is that it will be vintage. Send me out to buy new furniture-I'm stumped! My ever gracious husband has put up with flowery cottage with pink walls, all natural beige and white- and now.. Junque Couture. ( My sophistique' name for garage sale and flea market!)
